About Nelson Mandela Park

Nelson Mandela Park is a public park just inside Leicester city centre, close to Leicester Prison and the Leicester Tigers rugby stadium. It was formerly known as Welford Road Recreation Ground and was renamed on 6 August 1986 to celebrate Nelson Mandela, making it one of the first places in Britain named in his honour. In 2007 the park marked 21 years under its name with a festival at which 21 trees were planted, one for each of Leicester's wards at the time. The park is managed by Leicester City Council and sits within the Castle ward. Its facilities include a small children's play area, floodlighting and public toilets, and since March 2017 a set of outdoor gym equipment has been installed opposite the play area, similar to the kit found in Victoria Park. The open grassed space makes it a handy green break for families and workers in the heart of the city. As a council-run park it is free to enter and open to the public throughout the year.
