About Norfolk Heritage Park
Norfolk Heritage Park, historically Norfolk Park, is a 28-hectare park just south-east of Sheffield city centre. Laid out from 1841 on the initiative of the 12th Duke of Norfolk and opened to the public in 1848, it was one of the first free public parks in Britain, and it carries the 'Heritage' name in recognition of that significance. After a major restoration in the late 20th century it is now managed by Sheffield City Council and remains free to visit. For families there are two children's playgrounds: an under-8s area and an over-8s area near the main Guildford Avenue entrance, fitted with modern equipment including slides and climbing frames. A popular extra is the dedicated area for scooters and skateboards, which gives older and more active children somewhere of their own to play, and the playgrounds are open 24 hours a day. Next to the play areas is the Centre in the Park, which has toilets, meeting rooms, a creche and information about the park's history. With its tree-lined avenues, open grass and two well-equipped playgrounds, Norfolk Heritage Park is an easy, free day out close to the city centre.
