About Springburn Park
Springburn Park is a large historic park in the Springburn district of north Glasgow, managed by Glasgow City Council. Covering around 31 hectares (77 acres), it was opened by Glasgow Corporation in 1892 and laid out by City Engineer A. B. McDonald. The park sits on Balgrayhill at about 111 metres above sea level, the highest point in the north of the city, giving wide views across Glasgow. For families there is a children's play park, set among three ponds that attract a variety of wildlife, bowling greens, a Peace Garden, a rockery near the Balgrayhill Road entrance and walking paths looping through the grounds. The park is also home to the Springburn Winter Gardens, a grand glasshouse funded by Hugh Reid around 1900 and once one of the largest in Scotland, though it has lain derelict since the 1980s and is now a Category B listed building on the buildings-at-risk register. Other heritage features include a bandstand and a statue of James Reid of the local locomotive works. Combining open green space, ponds and a play area, Springburn Park is a valued community green space for north Glasgow.
