About Glasgow Green

Glasgow Green is the city's oldest park, with origins dating to 1450 when King James II granted the parkland to the people of Glasgow. Stretching across 55 hectares on the north bank of the River Clyde, just east of the Saltmarket, it sits within walking distance of the city centre. For families, the big draw is the Glasgow Green Play Village, which reopened after an upgrade as part of Glasgow City Council's play park investment programme, alongside a separate local play area. Public toilets are available at the Play Village, subject to opening times. The Green has long been a gathering place, hosting historic political meetings and, in more recent decades, major concerts and the finish of the Great Scottish Run. It is home to the People's Palace and Winter Gardens, the Doulton Fountain, extensive football pitches and the National Hockey Centre built for the 2014 Commonwealth Games. The Clyde Walkway and National Cycle Route 75 run through it, making it easy to combine a playground visit with a riverside walk or cycle. The park was awarded a Green Flag in 2011, the national benchmark for quality green spaces. It is free to enter and open at all times.
