About Govanhill Park
Govanhill Park is a small but well-used public park on Glasgow's southside, managed by Glasgow City Council. It was laid out as a recreation ground in 1894 by Glasgow Corporation and extends to about 0.8 hectares (2 acres). The park is divided into quadrants by tree-lined paths, with shrubs and flower-beds around the edges, and historically about half the original area was given over to ash pitches for football; a bandstand built in 1903 no longer survives. Today the park contains two children's play areas, an artificial sports pitch and a basketball court, giving families and older children a compact mix of play and ball-game space in the heart of densely populated Govanhill. The park has received council and Scottish Government investment through the play area renewal programme, with funds allocated for the play areas and for wider improvements to paths, entrances and facilities. Each August the Govanhill Carnival Parade assembles here before setting off towards Queen's Park. With its formal Victorian layout and modern play facilities, Govanhill Park is a neighbourhood green space serving a diverse community.
