About Richmond Park
Richmond Park is a public park in the Oatlands area of Glasgow's southside, managed by Glasgow City Council. It opened in 1899 and was named after the Lord Provost of the time, Sir David Richmond, whose tube works were located nearby; the park originally included a boating pond typical of urban parks from that era. The park lies north of Oatlands across Rutherglen Road and was the focus of a major £2 million extension and upgrading promoted by Glasgow City Council and the Oatlands Development Trust as part of the wider Oatlands housing regeneration from 2005 onwards. As the first phase of that programme, a new children's play area was created, giving local families a modern place to play. A burn runs through the park towards the River Clyde; historically it was affected by industrial chromium pollution from nearby works, though the park today is a green space serving the regenerated neighbourhood. With its walking paths and open grassland, Richmond Park remains an important community green space for Oatlands and the surrounding Gorbals area.
