About Albany Park

Albany Park is a 42-acre park in Albany Village, Washington, managed by Sunderland City Council and set beside the historic Washington 'F' Pit Museum, one of the last surviving pit engine houses in the region. The park features extensive grassed areas and woodland plantations, with paths suitable for buggies, wheelchairs, bikes and scooters, plus a children's play area for younger visitors and a car park on site. It is a popular local green space for walking and play close to the heart of Washington. The park sits at the centre of a major GBP 4.6 million regeneration scheme centred on the 'F' Pit Museum and Albany Park: museum works due for completion in 2027 will add a heritage visitor centre, cafe, outdoor exhibition space, additional play facilities and a new car park, while a second phase of park improvements is set to deliver a refurbished play area, a new dog exercise space, new paths, benches, bins and signage. For now the park remains open and free to use, offering families open grassland to run around in, woodland to explore and a play area beside a site of genuine industrial heritage. Its combination of green space, the 'F' Pit Museum and accessible paths makes it a distinctive family destination in the west of the city.
