About Abbeyfield Park
Abbeyfield Park is a much-loved community park in the Pitsmoor area of Burngreave, just north of Sheffield city centre. The house at its heart, Abbeyfield House, was first built by local colliery owner William Pass in 1850 and later altered and renamed by the solicitor Bernard Wake; after his death the house and grounds were bought by Sheffield Corporation in 1909 to create a park for local people. An original boating lake was later filled in and the children's playground moved to where the lake had been. Today the park has sloping lawns, a children's playground and Abbeyfield House, which serves as a community centre, making it a busy hub for one of the city's most culturally diverse neighbourhoods. The park regularly hosts multicultural events, live performances and community gardening projects, and has been championed since 1996 by the Friends of Abbeyfield Park, who raise funds for upkeep, improve facilities and safety, and work to protect the future of Abbeyfield House. As a Sheffield City Council park it is free to visit.
