About Thrybergh Country Park
Thrybergh Country Park is a reservoir and nature reserve set between Thrybergh and Hooton Roberts, a few miles north-east of Rotherham town centre. The 35-acre reservoir was built between 1876 and 1880 to supply drinking water, and the surrounding 60-acre site was acquired by Rotherham Metropolitan Borough Council in 1980 and opened as a country park in 1983. A largely level circular path of just over two miles runs around the lake, suitable for wheelchairs and buggies, and the water now supports over 155 recorded bird species, with two bird hides for watching them. For families there is a children's play area with a wooden play structure, plus a cafe with outdoor seating and an ice cream parlour, a barbecue area and mobility scooter hire. The park also has a small caravan and camping site and offers fly-fishing by permit between March and October. On-site parking and a Changing Places toilet make it an accessible choice for a day in the countryside. The park won a Green Flag Award in 2006. It is free to enter and explore, with charges only for extras such as fishing permits and camping.
