About Monks Rest Gardens
Monks Rest Gardens is a council-run park east of Leicester city centre, off Vicarage Lane in the Humberstone area (Humberstone and Hamilton ward). Its name recalls the medieval tradition of monks stopping here to rest and take refreshment, and the land became a public park around the late 1950s or early 1960s. Managed by Leicester City Council, it offers a good mix of facilities for families and sports players. There is a children's play area, plus six hard tennis courts open to players of all ages and abilities, a skate park and a bowls club. The park is also home to Leicester Croquet Club, which plays here from April to October. An expansive open field makes it popular for informal play and dog walking, and the park is dog-friendly, with a nearby car park for visitors arriving by car. As a council-run park it is free to enter and open to the public throughout the year.
