About Humberstone Park
Humberstone Park is a public park of around 16 acres about three miles east of Leicester city centre, on Uppingham Road. Managed by Leicester City Council and free to enter, it was officially opened in 1929 on the former Meadow House Estate and is a typical 1920s park design with formal gardens, specimen trees and woodland. For families, the park has a children's play area that includes a sandy play area along with a range of swings and climbing equipment, plus an outdoor gym for older children and adults. A skate park was added in 2004 following a campaign by local teenagers. There is also a bike path, a tennis court and a bowls court, and the Bushby Brook runs through the grounds. The park's historic buildings include Meadow House, now used as a refreshment pavilion and cafe, and a Victorian gate lodge built in 1876. Originally the children's area featured a sandpit that was converted to a paddling pool in 1939, and the modern play area dates from 1989. Humberstone Park remains a popular neighbourhood green space with a good mix of play, sport and gardens for local families.
