About Jewel Park

Jewel Park is a free, public park off Duddingston Park South in south-east Edinburgh, between the Bingham area and Portobello, and is managed by the City of Edinburgh Council. Opened by the council in 1959, it takes its name from a rich seam of coal that once ran beneath the ground here. The park is divided by the Niddrie Burn into two halves: a sports section with football pitches and a kick-about area next to Duddingston Park South, and a quieter section for strolling and play for younger children. Following a major investment the play provision was revamped, and the equipment now includes a climbing wall, a bird's nest climbing frame and a ball court, catering for a wide span of ages from younger children up to older children and teenagers. There is also a small enclosed section where younger children can play football, games or cycle in safety. The park has attractive community woodland of birch, ash, rowan, cherry, sorbus and sycamore, with hard, lit paths making it usable through the darker months. With its mix of active and natural features, Jewel Park is a well-rounded local green space on the east side of the city.
