About Craigmillar Castle Park
Craigmillar Castle Park is a large green space in the Craigmillar area of south-east Edinburgh, set in the shadow of the historic Craigmillar Castle and including Hawkhill Woods. Managed by the City of Edinburgh Council's Natural Heritage Service, it offers miles of footpaths through woodland and open grassland, giving families plenty of room to roam, walk and let children play. Its standout family feature is an unusual adventure playground built almost entirely from ropes: three rope pyramids and interconnected climbing challenges with a maze of rope nets, rope ladders, rope bridges, rope monkey bars and rope hammocks, plus two slides, making it a real climbing adventure for more confident children. Picnic tables sit by the playground, and children can hunt for fairy doors hidden in the surrounding woodlands. The wider park has interpretation panels and an orienteering course, and sits within easy reach of Craigmillar Castle itself for a longer day out. The nearest bus stops on Peffermill Road and Dalkeith Road are within about a ten-minute walk of the play park. The park has held a Green Flag Award since 2010. Free and full of space to explore, it is a distinctive choice for adventurous families.
