About Hailes Quarry Park
Hailes Quarry Park is a free, public park in the Wester Hailes area of west Edinburgh, between the Kingsknowe and Dumbryden estates and beside the Union Canal, managed by the City of Edinburgh Council. The park sits on the site of a former quarry: Hailes Quarry was worked from around 1750 to 1900 and supplied stone for stairs and landings in Edinburgh's New Town, before the abandoned pit was used as a landfill and then grassed over and turned into a park in the 1980s. Today it is a large, open green space on gently sloping land, crossed by grassy and tarmac paths and a boardwalk through a wetland area, with shrubby woodland and wide views. For families there is a play area for toddlers and juniors, alongside more active features including a mountain-bike and cycle pump track, a climbing wall and an outdoor gym, so it appeals to older children and teenagers as well. The park is popular with walkers, joggers and cyclists and hosts a regular parkrun, making it a well-used community space on the west side of the city.
