About Braidburn Valley Park

Braidburn Valley Park is a free, public park in south Edinburgh, between Morningside and Oxgangs, following the course of the Braid Burn, and managed by the City of Edinburgh Council. It has been a public park since 1933 and, at around 11 hectares, is the fourth-largest community park in the city. Open 24 hours a day, it is popular for dog walking, informal sports and simply relaxing on the grass. For families, the park's play provision includes play equipment aimed at a mix of age groups, a multi-use games area, a bouldering wall and an outdoor gym. The park is full of character: a grassy amphitheatre with a stage has hosted outdoor performances, and Girl Guides planted cherry trees in a trefoil formation in 1935 to mark King George V's Silver Jubilee, giving a spectacular spring blossom display. The western boundary carries the Fly Walk, the route Robert Louis Stevenson is said to have followed between his home at Swanston and the city. Designated a Local Biodiversity Site, the park supports herons, bats, foxes, otters and trout. It was awarded Scotland's first Green Flag for excellence in parks in 2007 and has retained it every year since.
