About Despenser Gardens
Despenser Gardens is a small, enclosed community green space in Riverside, just west of the River Taff and Cardiff city centre, and is one of two public gardens that serve the densely populated Riverside area alongside nearby Clare Gardens. Managed by Cardiff Council, it is very much a neighbourhood park, popular with local families who use it as an everyday place to play. The gardens contain two colourful, wood-chipped playgrounds divided into a toddler play area and a junior play area, so that younger and older children each have equipment suited to their age. Alongside the play areas there is a small ball-games area for informal football and plenty of seating for parents and carers. The gardens have also become a focus for community art, with a piece of artwork installed to replace a worn floor mosaic, created with input from local schoolchildren who helped make clay inserts for timber structures. Flat and easy to reach on foot from the surrounding streets, Despenser Gardens is a handy, free local play space in a part of the city with limited green space. It is open at all times with no charge for admission.
