About Bute Park
Bute Park is the green heart of Cardiff, a 130-acre Grade I listed parkland stretching along the River Taff directly behind Cardiff Castle and just a short walk from the main shopping streets. Managed by Cardiff Council, it was gifted to the city by the Bute family and is renowned for its arboretum and nationally important tree collection. For families the main draw is the Woodland Play Trail, hidden in the woods behind the Summerhouse Cafe, where 11 outdoor play items form a fun woodland balance trail for younger children. Elsewhere in the park a series of carved wood sculptures, formed from retained tree stumps and commissioned during the park's restoration, encourage natural play. Refreshments are available at the Summerhouse Cafe and the Pettigrew Tea Rooms, with toilets including baby-change at several points, and a visitor centre at West Lodge. Entry is free and the park is open every day of the year from 7:30am until half an hour before sunset. There is no on-site car park, but pay-and-display parking is available nearby at Castle Mews and North Road. Dogs are welcome but asked to be on a lead around the cafes.
