About Temple Newsam

Temple Newsam is a historic estate on the eastern edge of Leeds, with roots recorded in the Domesday Book and a Tudor-Jacobean mansion built around 1500-1520. In the 1760s Charles Ingram employed Capability Brown to re-landscape the park, and much of that pastoral design still shapes the rolling parkland, woods and lake today. The estate was bought for the city in the early 20th century and is now owned and managed by Leeds City Council. While the house and the Home Farm rare-breeds attraction are paid, the extensive parkland is free to roam and so is the children's playground. The innovative adventure playground opened in 2011 and was designed so that disabled and able-bodied children can play together. Around the play area, families can explore Capability Brown parkland, woodland that forms part of the Forest of Leeds, a walled garden with rhododendron walks, a lake and stream, and there is a cafe and free on-site parking. It makes an excellent free day out combining a proper playground with a huge landscaped estate to explore.
