About Billesley Common
Billesley Common is a large area of public open space in south Birmingham, stretching along Yardley Wood Road between Moseley and Yardley Wood. It was first recorded in 1774 as 'common wasteland' and has grown into a popular recreation ground with strong ties to the surrounding communities. Owned and managed by Birmingham City Council, the common is a magnet for walkers, joggers, dog walkers and families. For children there is a playground, and the wider common offers outdoor gym equipment and a football pitch. The site also has strong sporting links: Birmingham Moseley Rugby Football Club has leased part of the common since 2005 for its pitches and clubhouse, and the Billesley Indoor Tennis Centre is based here. The southern section is dominated by mature trees with well laid-out pathways, where Haunch Brook flows through and attracts many bird species. With entrances off Brook Lane (A4040), Yardley Wood Road, Haunch Lane and Hollybank Road, it is easy to reach from across the area.
