About War Memorial Park

War Memorial Park is a historic Georgian park within walking distance of Basingstoke town centre. In 1921 the Corporation of Basingstoke bought the land for 4,500 pounds, raised by public subscription, to be held forever for the benefit of the town as a memorial to those lost in the First World War. Today it is one of the borough's best-loved green spaces. At its centre is an all-weather children's play area that includes a scooter track and inclusive equipment, suitable for toddler and junior-age children, so families can visit in most weather. Beyond the playground the park offers plenty for all ages, with a bandstand, an aviary, a skate park and pump track, sports pitches, and both indoor and outdoor tennis courts, along with outdoor gym equipment. Benches and picnic benches are dotted throughout, and the buggy and wheelchair accessible paths make it easy to explore, with National Cycle Network Route 23 passing through. Two independent cafes, the Park Social Cafe and the Orchard Cafe, serve refreshments. Toilets, including an accessible facility, are in the John Arlott Pavilion, and free parking with disabled bays is reached via Crossborough Hill. The park is free to enter.
