About Longwood Recreation Ground

Longwood Recreation Ground, on Spark Street in the Longwood suburb west of Huddersfield, is a community recreation ground in the Golcar ward managed by Kirklees Council. It was chosen for investment under the council's Playable Spaces Strategy, which aims to improve the quality of children's play across the borough, and the play area has been refurbished and extended in phases as funding allowed. The upgraded play area is designed to suit a wide age range and places a strong emphasis on inclusion: it features a new inclusive see-saw and inclusive spinner, a basket swing and toddler swing, a multi-unit play structure, a climber and agility unit, a slide and a basketball post, with an existing inclusive unit refurbished and kept in place. Half of the play surface was retained or topped up with bark while the other half was laid in Eco mulch to improve accessibility, and new safety surfacing was installed beneath the equipment. The works also added a bitmac pathway with playable line markings, goal posts, and new benches and picnic seating. It is a free, open-access neighbourhood space built around accessible play.
