About Greenhead Park
Greenhead Park is Huddersfield's best-known public park, opening in September 1884 and lying about half a mile west of the town centre. A grade II listed Victorian park, it draws an estimated 250,000 visitors a year and sits within a conservation area. There are two playable spaces on site. The first, next to the miniature railway, is split into a fenced-off toddler area and a larger un-fenced space for junior ages and upwards; the second sits between the events field and the war memorial. Beyond the play areas, the park is well equipped for families, with the last remaining paddling pool in Kirklees, a skate park, tennis courts, a multi-sports court and bowling greens. The council community directory lists wheelchair access, disabled parking and a fully accessible toilet. Managed by Kirklees Council, the park is free to enter and open to the public, and its play areas are among the sites being reviewed under the council's Playable Spaces Strategy for future enhancement. With its railway, formal planting and generous open space, it remains one of the most popular free days out in the Huddersfield area.
