About Jesmond Dene

Jesmond Dene is one of Newcastle's best-loved green spaces, a steep wooded river valley carved by the Ouseburn and gifted to the city by Lord Armstrong in the 19th century. Control of the Dene returned to Newcastle City Council in March 2025. Families head for the play area next to Pets' Corner, which was designed and built as part of the Ouseburn Parks Lottery Project in 2011. Beyond the playground there is plenty to fill a day: a free Pets' Corner, nature trails winding through ancient woodland, bridges over the river perfect for pooh sticks, a pond-dipping area and picnic spots near the waterfall. A cafe at the Visitor Centre serves refreshments, and there are toilets both at the centre and at the picnic field. Parking is available along Red Walk, with disabled bays close to the visitor centre, plus more on Benton Bank. Many paths are steep, but flatter routes run alongside the river for prams and wheelchairs. The Dene is popular with dog walkers and remains entirely free to enter.
