About Iris Brickfield Park

Iris Brickfield is a popular community park in the heart of Heaton and a genuine nature and wildlife haven. Owned by Newcastle City Council and managed by Urban Green Newcastle, it sits on the site of a former quarry opened in 1903 for brick making, which was later used as a tip before being transformed into the green space it is today. For families there are two play areas - a fenced play area and an open play area - plus a small-sided informal grass football pitch and plenty of open grass for a kick about. The park's real character comes from its wildlife: a large wildflower meadow, a thriving pond with a dipping platform, a striking willow arch on the approach to the pond, a wetland area that attracts birds, insects, frogs and bats, and a community orchard maintained by the Friends of Iris Brickfield and Groundwork. There are no toilets within the park, and on-street parking is available at Rothbury Terrace. A good network of footpaths suitable for prams or wheelchairs runs through the site, though the pond dipping platform is not suitable for people with mobility issues. The park is free to enter and is a popular spot for dog walking.
