About Birchfields Park
Birchfields Park was formally opened on 20 October 1888 by Prince Albert Victor, Duke of Clarence and Avondale, a grandson of Queen Victoria. Its roughly 23 acres were assembled from a five-acre donation by Sir William Anson plus land bought by Manchester Corporation, and the original layout included a drinking fountain, tennis courts, bowling greens, a bandstand and the Gore Brook running through the site — where a stone garden and natural habitat sit today. For families there are separate junior and toddler play areas (with equipment for ages 3–8 and older-child play), a multi-use games area, a skate park, basketball posts, a teen shelter and a trim trail. The park won a Green Flag Award in 2014.
