About Parkwood Springs
Parkwood Springs is a large natural green space just a mile from Sheffield city centre, in the Shirecliffe area. Originally a medieval deer park, it is now a roughly 150-hectare (370-acre) open space that an ongoing masterplan aims to develop into 'Our Country Park in the City', managed by Sheffield City Council with the Friends of Parkwood Springs. For families there is a car park, a children's play area and a small café open on certain days, plus a bike pump track and a couple of football pitches, with plenty of open space for children to run around. The wider site mixes woodland and heath with open parkland and a range of natural habitats where wild lupins bloom, kestrels hover and deer have returned, alongside mountain bike trails. It offers spectacular views over the city centre, the suburbs and the distant moors of the Peak District. Recent work has added more paths and bike tracks, a kiosk and toilets, and over £19 million of government funding has been allocated to redevelop the former ski village site and advance the next stage of the country park. Free to visit year-round, Parkwood Springs is a wild, family-friendly space close to the heart of the city.
