About Bellahouston Park
Bellahouston Park is a large Southside park whose core was bought by Glasgow Corporation from the Maxwell estate in 1895 for £50,000 and opened to the public in 1896, expanding with further land in 1901 and 1903. It is best remembered for the 1938 Empire Exhibition, which drew 12.5 million visits, and today contains Charles Rennie Mackintosh's House for an Art Lover, completed in 1996 from 1901 drawings. For families the park has three play areas, including an adventure playground, set among formal gardens and open parkland with views over the city. There is an extensive network of asphalt footpaths suitable for walking and cycling as well as wheelchair and pram access. Active facilities include the Glasgow Ski and Snowboard Centre with its artificial slope, Bellahouston Sports Centre, all-weather hockey pitches, a bowling club, cycling facilities and an orienteering course, plus a walled garden. The park is managed by Glasgow City Council, is free to enter and open at all times, with individual facilities keeping their own hours.
