About King Edward Memorial Park Playground
King Edward Memorial Park is a historic riverside park in Shadwell, managed by the London Borough of Tower Hamlets. It occupies the site of the former Shadwell Fish Market, acquired after the death of King Edward VII, and was opened to the public on 24 June 1922 by King George V. Laid out with playgrounds, flower gardens, a bandstand and a riverside promenade, the park covers around 3.3 hectares. It provides two children's play areas, one for ages 4 and below and one for ages 5 and above. The original children's playground was permanently relocated and redesigned in consultation with the local community to offer different play experiences for a range of needs, as part of the council's masterplan for the park. Other facilities include a bandstand, a meadow area and pay-to-play tennis courts. Access to the riverside has been affected by the Thames Tideway construction project, but the park itself remains open throughout the works. The park is free to enter and is a short walk from Shadwell station on the London Overground and DLR.
