About Geraldine Mary Harmsworth Park Playground
Geraldine Mary Harmsworth Park is the roughly 16-hectare green space surrounding the Imperial War Museum London, in the St George's area of the London Borough of Southwark. It opened in 1934 and is maintained by Southwark Council. The park is named after Geraldine Mary Harmsworth, whose son Harold Harmsworth, 1st Viscount Rothermere, bought the land and donated it for public use. The site was formerly home to the Bethlem Royal Hospital, part of whose building became the Imperial War Museum in the 1930s. The children's playground is split into two sections, making it suitable for a range of ages, with a dedicated area for toddlers as well as equipment for older children. The wider park offers five-a-side football pitches, netball, basketball and tennis courts, an outdoor gym, picnic tables and a quiet Peace Garden.
