About Arthur Newbery Park
Arthur Newbery Park sits on a hill in Tilehurst in west Reading, named after Arthur Newbery, who donated the land in 1932. One of Reading's oldest parks, it was once part of Kentwood Common. The open parkland is cut as a summer meadow and framed by beech and lime tree avenues, with mown paths leading to viewpoints that look across the River Thames towards Mapledurham Woods. Families come for the children's play area, which has a sand area featuring a giant pirate ship added in 2016 and, more recently, a pick-up play truck climbing frame complete with a side slide. An adjoining woodland, Kentwood Copse, adds wildlife interest and shady walks. The park provides disabled access and footpaths, though some of the paths are sloping given the hillside setting, and there is seating dotted around. Dog bins are provided for walkers. Managed by Reading Borough Council, Arthur Newbery Park is free to enter and offers a mix of play, woodland and far-reaching views that make it a distinctive Tilehurst green space.
