About Fairy Dell
Fairy Dell is a 42-acre Green Flag nature park in Coulby Newham on the southern edge of Middlesbrough, a haven for wildlife with its becks, central lake, woodland and grassy glades. It is a mixture of park, woodland and wetlands, and has held Green Flag status continuously since 2017. For families the appeal is partly the fun, natural feel of the place: there is wooden play equipment aimed at younger children, plus free outdoor exercise equipment for those aged 14 and over. Carved wooden statues, including a dragon and a ladybird, are dotted along the trails and are a particular hit with children, turning a walk into a hunt for hidden creatures. Walking trails lead through woodland and alongside the water, with plenty of wildlife to spot. The park is cared for by the Friends of Fairy Dell, a local volunteer group, in partnership with Middlesbrough Council. The gates are not locked, so it is open 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. There is limited free parking outside the entrances, including a few spaces by the Gunnergate entrance. Entry is free.
