About Calderstones Park Playground
Calderstones Park covers about 126 acres in Allerton, south-east Liverpool, and is managed by Liverpool City Council, with the Mansion House and its attractions run by the reading charity The Reader. The park is named after the Calder Stones — six neolithic sandstone monoliths, around 4,000 years old, that are a scheduled ancient monument. The park opened in 1905 around a house built in 1828. For families there is a playground designed for toddlers and young children — with slides, swings, a climbing frame, a roundabout, spinners and a spider's-web net — plus an adjacent wooded area for older children, and The Reader's Storybarn, an imaginative indoor play space with relaxed sessions for autistic children. On Sundays a miniature railway runs (weather permitting), and there are cafés, an ice-cream parlour, a Japanese garden and the celebrated Allerton Oak, named England's Tree of the Year in 2019.
