About Abbey Park

Abbey Park is Leicester's flagship public park, opened in 1882 and set across around 89 acres in the grounds of the medieval St Mary's Abbey, just north of the city centre. Managed by Leicester City Council and free to enter, it is a Green Flag Award park laid out around the River Soar with a boating lake, formal gardens, a sensory garden and a lavender maze. For families, the park has a children's play area with adventure play equipment and a paddling pool popular in warmer months, plus a Pets Corner with small animals and a seasonal miniature railway that has run since 1949. There are also tennis courts, a bowling green and self-guided orienteering routes. Facilities include an on-site cafe and visitor centre, accessible toilets near the cafe and a Changing Places toilet. Level paths run through most of the park with step-free access to the main historic and garden areas, and there is a pay-and-display car park on site. The ruins of St Mary's Abbey and Cavendish House add a strong heritage dimension to a day out.
