About Wilton Park
Wilton Park is the main public park serving the town of Batley in north Kirklees, laid out in the grounds of a Victorian mill owner's Gothic mansion. It opened to the public in 1909 and is managed by Kirklees Council; the mansion at its heart is now the free-to-enter Bagshaw Museum, set in around 36 acres of parkland and ancient woodland. The park falls into two main areas divided by a steeply sloping wooded belt, and a long-closed railway line once crossed the estate, its course and a bridge at the main entrance still visible. For families there is a children's play area and a paddling pool, alongside bowling greens and tennis courts. The wider grounds take in a lake, formal gardens, natural woodland and open fields, with woodland and lakeside walks threading through them; the Batley Pathways to Health walking routes start here. A cafe is available at the museum. With its mix of play provision, heritage museum and varied green space, Wilton Park works well for a half-day family outing close to Batley town centre.
