About South Avenue Park, Spondon
South Avenue Park is a free, public park in Spondon on the east side of Derby, managed by Derby City Council with support from the Friends of Spondon Parks. The roughly 1-hectare site is historically a First World War memorial playing field for the community and is now best known for its modern children's play area, which was officially opened in 2023. The GBP 115,000 play area, funded through developer contributions and community fundraising, features a range of swings, an accessible roundabout, a seesaw, a springer, a spinning bowl and play panels, plus two multi-play units aimed at different ages and abilities with slides, overhead bars and bridges, and a double zip wire. A new tarmac footpath from one of the gates provides an accessible route into the play area, though the main entrance can be difficult for pushchairs and wheelchairs in wet conditions. The park has walking paths but no toilets or cafe on site, and there is no designated parking, with access on foot from the corner of South Avenue and Gravel Pit Lane closest to the play area. It is a good, modern, no-cost playground for local Spondon families.
