About Hylands Park

Hylands Park is a 232-hectare (574-acre) historic estate southwest of Chelmsford, owned and operated by Chelmsford City Council and free to enter on foot. At its heart stands Hylands House, a Grade II* listed neo-classical villa opened to the public after phased restoration, surrounded by formal Victorian pleasure gardens, the One World Garden created for the 2007 World Scout Jamboree, and large areas of ancient woodland and parkland. The park's standout family attraction is the award-winning Adventure Castle, an accessible castle-themed playground with four-metre-high battlements, a drawbridge and a portcullis entrance, with dedicated play zones for children above and below the age of six. The play area is fully inclusive and wheelchair accessible, holding PiPA accreditation with top-level 'Destination' status, one of only nine sites nationally to achieve this. A cafe and visitor centre occupy the restored Stables, and a Changing Places accessible toilet and picnic areas support longer visits. Dogs are welcome on leads across most of the park, though the Adventure Playground and One World Garden are dog-free. Entry and the playground are free; car parking charges apply between 9am and 6pm at the London Road and Greenbury Way car parks, so the estate makes a rewarding, mostly free day out for families.
