About Central Park

Central Park is Chelmsford's best-known public park, covering almost 15 hectares of green space in the heart of the city centre, run free of charge by Chelmsford City Council. Originally called the Recreation Ground, it took shape after the Eastern Counties Railway reached Chelmsford in 1842, and today the distinctive 18-arch railway viaduct of that year still forms a backdrop to the park. The River Can flows through the grounds past a lake, mature oak avenues planted by successive mayors since 1917, and riverside walks that link to neighbouring Admirals Park and Tower Gardens. Families come for the children's play areas, a skateboard ramp, basketball, table tennis and a multi-use games area, while a model railway and ice cream concession add to the appeal. The Central Park Cafe serves locally sourced food with indoor and outdoor seating. The park holds a Green Flag Award and adjoins the Marconi Ponds Local Nature Reserve. The Chelmsford parkrun starts here every Saturday morning, following the River Can to Admirals Park and back, making the park a dependable free day out in every season.
