About Kirkstall Abbey

Kirkstall Abbey is a historic ruined Cistercian abbey on Abbey Road in Kirkstall, with free-to-visit grounds managed by Leeds City Council. Alongside the atmospheric abbey ruins, the park is a great space for families to play, picnic and explore all year round. There is a large children's playground, located next to the museum car park, plus a smaller playground nearby. The play area has lots of equipment and features such as a finger maze and a monk character cut-out that children can take turns being the face of. Facilities at the site include a café, toilets, baby change, a visitor centre and a picnic area, and free parking is available next to the Abbey House Museum. For older children there are tennis courts to book, football and rugby pitches for organised groups, and an extensive network of paths for walking or jogging. Combining a scheduled ancient monument with family play facilities, Kirkstall Abbey is one of the most rewarding free days out in north-west Leeds.
