About Sutton Park
Sutton Park, in Sutton Coldfield, is one of the largest urban parks in the United Kingdom, spanning around 2,400 acres (971 hectares). It is a National Nature Reserve (designated in 1997) and includes Scheduled Ancient Monuments, with heathland, wetlands, marshes, seven lakes and ancient woodland that covers roughly a quarter of the site. The park is managed by Birmingham City Council and there is no charge to enter. For families there are two children's playgrounds, one near the Town Gate entrance and one near the Banners Gate entrance; the Banners Gate playground was significantly upgraded with funding obtained from 2002. The wider park offers an enormous range of activities including dog walking, cycling, golf, model-aircraft flying, sailing and other watersports, plus a visitor centre, restaurants and a donkey sanctuary. A free 5km parkrun takes place at 9am every Saturday. The sheer scale and variety of landscapes make it a destination for a full family day out rather than just a quick playground visit.
