About Hackney City Farm
Hackney City Farm has been bringing farming into the heart of East London for over 35 years, having been established in 1984 by enthusiastic local community members. Set in the Haggerston area just off Hackney Road, it is a working smallholding squeezed into an urban setting, giving children and grown-ups the chance to get close to farmyard animals including pigs, goats, sheep, rabbits, poultry, bees and a donkey. It is free to visit, running as a small community charity that relies on donations and the support of its partners. Beyond the animal pens there is a market garden and herb-and-flower growing areas where children can see, smell and learn how food and plants grow, making a visit both fun and educational - spring is a favourite time when the baby animals arrive. On site there is a cafe, a farm shop and spaces for classes, workshops and parties. The farmyard opens Tuesday to Sunday from 10:00 to 16:30 and is closed on Mondays except bank holidays. There is no dedicated car park, but the farm is very well served by local buses and Hoxton and Cambridge Heath stations are close by, so it is an easy, free day out for families in the city.
