About Hackney Downs Playground

Hackney Downs is an area of historic common land in the Lower Clapton area of the London Borough of Hackney, off Downs Park Road. Managed by Hackney Council, it is a large open green space that doubles as a neighbourhood park and sports hub. Its children's play area was refurbished and enlarged, reopening in spring 2023 as part of the council's programme to upgrade play areas across the borough. The redesigned playground takes inspiration from a mosaic depicting wild animals, using planting, colour and stone to evoke different habitats. It retains a much-loved timber climbing structure and its slides, and adds an enlarged play mound with boulders, planting and climbing logs, a new tower on top of the mound linked by a net bridge to the timber structure, and a wide slide, providing more challenging play for older children as well as younger ones. Wider park facilities include floodlit tennis and basketball courts, a floodlit multi-use games area, a seasonal athletics track, a community room for hire and team changing rooms. Dogs are not permitted in the play area or sports facilities, and there is a dog-free zone within the park.
