About Birkenhead Park

Birkenhead Park sits on Park Drive in the heart of Birkenhead and is managed by Wirral Council. Opened in 1847, it is famous as the world's first publicly funded civic park and is now a Grade 1 historic landscape, open 24 hours a day, seven days a week and free to enter. Families head for the formal children's playground in the lower park beside the Balaclava Field, which is easy to reach from the Ashville Road entrance and carriage drive and is well used by toddlers and juniors in the summer. A large play boulder, added in 2011, gives older children something to clamber on. Beyond play, the park offers two lakes for angling (permit required), football pitches, bowling greens, a fitness trail and gentle woodland walks, all threaded with the ornamental lakes, the Swiss bridge and the Roman boathouse that make the landscape so distinctive. The visitor centre has a cafe plus public toilets and baby changing. Note that vehicle access has been temporarily restricted to emergency services and staff, so check the council page before driving. With its history, scenery and free play, Birkenhead Park makes an easy day out.
