About Hamiltonhill Claypits Local Nature Reserve

Hamiltonhill Claypits Local Nature Reserve is an inner-city nature reserve on the northern fringe of Glasgow city centre, running alongside the Forth and Clyde Canal between the Firhill basin and Applecross Street. Covering around seven hectares, the reserve forms a green interface between the Hamiltonhill, Firhill, Ruchill and Woodside communities and was transformed from derelict, post-industrial land through a £7.6 million publicly funded regeneration led by Scottish Canals, opening in July 2021. The project created about 1.5km of new woodland and wetland footpaths, hard landscaping, boardwalks, viewpoints, a distinctive sliding pedestrian bridge connecting to the canal towpath, and play, art and interpretation features designed to encourage activity and exploration. The design prioritised inclusivity, with fully accessible pathways and safe access for nearby communities, and the site is managed as a Local Nature Reserve by Glasgow City Council. Visitors will find picnic tables, dogs are welcome, and there are multiple entrances including Applecross Street, Ellesmere Street, Garscube Road, Westercommon Road and Panmure Gate. Rich in wildlife, the Claypits offers families a green escape, play features and accessible canalside walks within a short distance of the city centre.
