About George Bancroft Park
George Bancroft Park is a modern municipal park created by Blackpool Council in 2006 on former railway land near Blackpool Central, part of the town's Central Gateway regeneration. It opened almost 80 years after Stanley Park, Blackpool's last major park, and is named after George Bancroft, a former leader of Blackpool Town Council who died in 2001. Free to enter and set off Seasiders Way on Stansfield Street, it combines landscaped gardens with genuinely unusual play and sport features. For young children there is a dedicated early years play area, which has been relocated to a spot closer to the Waterloo Road bridge. The park's standout features, though, are its two sculptural 20-metre climbing towers and a bouldering wall, giving older children, teenagers and climbers something you rarely find in a public park, alongside an enclosed court for basketball and five-a-side football. The design, with a ceremonial opening by Laurence Llewelyn-Bowen, makes this as much a piece of public landscape as a conventional playground. The council listing confirms the park and its play area but does not detail toilets, parking, a cafe or a dogs policy, so plan a shorter visit and treat those facilities as unconfirmed.
