About Norman Park

Norman Park is a small park in Birkby, straddling Birkby Hall Road about two miles from Huddersfield town centre and owned and maintained by Kirklees Council. It opened to the public in 1896, at a time when Birkby was expanding rapidly, and was originally known as Fartown Recreation Ground, covering just under two acres. In 1921 a memorial was erected to those from the Fartown and Birkby district who died in the First World War, and the park still commemorates them today. For families, the park offers a children's playground alongside a skate bowl, a multi-use games area (MUGA) and outdoor fitness equipment, making it a useful local spot for a range of ages. The park is supported by the Friends of Norman Park, a volunteer group formed in 1998 to work in partnership with Kirklees Council, tackling the backlog of maintenance and repairing damage caused by vandalism. Free to enter and open to the public, Norman Park is a modest but well-used neighbourhood green space serving the Birkby and Fartown community. As it is a smaller local park, facilities such as toilets, parking and refreshments are not confirmed in our official sources, so visitors are advised to plan ahead.
