About Johnston Gardens

Johnston Gardens is a small but much-admired ornamental public garden in the Rubislaw area of west Aberdeen, managed by Aberdeen City Council. Formerly part of the Johnston House estate, it was gifted to the city in 1936 and extends to around one hectare, with access from Viewfield Road near the Gordon Highlanders Museum. The garden is a repeated winner in Britain in Bloom and similar competitions, and is laid out around a Japanese-style pond crossed by an arched rustic bridge, with streams, a waterfall and winding paths leading between rockeries. Planting is rich with spring bulbs, rhododendrons, heathers and alpines, and the pond and mature trees draw a variety of birds, making duck-feeding a popular activity with young families. Tucked among the routes is a small children's play area suited to younger children, so a visit can combine a gentle garden stroll with a short play stop. Quiet, compact and beautifully planted, Johnston Gardens is one of Aberdeen's hidden-gem green spaces. Free to enter, it is a calm spot for a family wander in the west end.
