About Purston Park
Purston Park is a well-loved community green space in Featherstone, in the Wakefield district, and is a protected open space under Wakefield Council's planning policies. Opened in the 1950s, it was created from the grounds of what was originally a private residence and country estate, whose stately home later served as the town hall before being converted into flats. The park takes up a large area and its centrepiece for families is a children's play area, set beside a scenic lake and duck pond that is a favourite stop for visiting ducks. Alongside the playground there is a skate park, tennis courts and a basketball area for older children and teenagers, plus a rose garden created in 2004 on the site of the park's former bowling green. The park has long benefited from the dedication of the Friends of Purston Park, volunteers who for many years helped maintain the grounds and were recently recognised with a commemorative Daffodil Bench overlooking the pond. Free to enter and open every day, Purston Park offers a relaxed, traditional park day out in the east of the district.
