About Pugneys Country Park

Pugneys Country Park is a 250-acre countryside site managed by Wakefield Council, set around two lakes designated as a nature reserve and overlooked by the ruins of Sandal Castle. Developed from a former opencast mine and sand and gravel quarry, it opened to the public in 1985 and has become one of the district's busiest free days out. For families the headline attractions are the Pirates' Cove play area and the Blown Away adventure trail, together with a children's adventure boat on the beach and plenty of open space for outdoor games, walking and cycling. The Pugneys Light Railway, a miniature railway, runs around part of the larger lake, and there is cycle hire on site through J's Cycles. Entry to the park is free; parking is pay-and-display, with charges from 1 pound for up to two hours, and free parking for disabled badge holders. The Boat House café and toilets are open from 9am to 4pm, with the main park gates open from 9am to 9pm through the summer. It is an ideal spot for a lakeside family day out close to Wakefield.
