About Pontefract Park

Pontefract Park sits about a mile north of the town centre and is one of the Wakefield district's largest and most popular free parks, ringed by the historic racecourse and open every day. In 2023 Wakefield Council invested around 450,000 pounds in a new play area with a fairy-tale theme chosen to echo the nearby racecourse and Pontefract Castle. The enclosed play area contains 30 pieces of equipment with 250 play features suitable for babies and children aged up to 14. Toddlers can go on a dragon hunt, make potions and find a gingerbread house, while older children can tackle a castle with a slide and a nine-metre-tall 'giant's unit'. Around the playground the park offers wide open green space for games and picnics, sports pitches, a lake popular with ducks and geese, and the racecourse itself, which holds around 16 race meetings a year. There is free parking on site and the Café@thePark, inside the Aspire leisure facility, is open seven days a week and welcomes all park users. Dogs are welcome in the wider park, making it an easy all-round family day out.
