About Houndwell Park

Houndwell Park is one of the five Grade II* listed Central Parks in the heart of Southampton, laid out between 1854 and 1866 and managed by Southampton City Council. It lies just south of Palmerston Park, separated by Pound Tree Road, and its main attraction is a large, fully inclusive playground, the only one within the Central Parks. The play area is themed around the city's maritime tradition and historic walls, with a centrepiece play structure known as The Titanic. There are three main structures, a boat, a sinking ship set in a sand pit and a castle, alongside several smaller pieces including roundabouts, a basket (nest) swing, toddler swings, a tunnel, a toddler climbing frame and bouncy ladybirds. Equipment includes a climbing frame, climbing wall, see-saw, slide and wooden bridge. The playground has been designed for children of all ages and abilities: one roundabout is wheelchair accessible, at least one structure has an access ramp, and there are musical instruments that children in wheelchairs can use. The surrounding Central Parks offer a cafe, toilets, seating and picnic tables within a short walk. Access to the park and the playground is free every day of the year.
